During the press conference on 11 January, Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate, Robert Habeck, says that Germany needs qualified migration to fill the job vacancies and maintain productivity.
“We have 300,000 job openings today and expect that to climb to a million and more,” said Minister Habeck. “Naturally, (this means) better combining qualifications, training and possibilities for families and jobs, but in Germany certainly stepped-up immigration as well, and in all areas, for engineers, crafts people, careers. We have to organise this.”
The German Institute for Economic Research has estimated that in 2022, more than 300,000 will leave their jobs and retire, and not enough young people are available to take their places.
